I picked up a pair of these chairs on Craigslist for $15 each. I was looking for wood chairs that I could paint and distress with a little sanding. I chose red to add a pop of color to our bonus room and the fabric on the seat cushions coordinated with the wall color. I am really loving the red and green together on this funky chair makeover.
I would have loved to have painted these with some milk or chalk paint but at the time I didn’t want to spend the money. Since this was my first time painting chairs I was just looking for a cheap update. So, I headed over to Lowe’s and picked up a quart of red latex paint in a satin finish.
I didn’t sand or prime or really even clean the chairs before I started painting. I am typically impatient, lazy and overly excited when I start a project and usually end up wishing I had spent a little more time in the prep. So with my paint brush in hand I slapped on two coats of paint, let it dry, sanded and then sealed with a satin poly.
In retrospect I wish I had spent the money and purchased either a milk or chalk paint. I think the finish on these chairs may have turned out better. I have seen several furniture pieces on Hometalk painted in Miss Mustard Seed’s Tricycle milk paint, that color is gorgeous! I really need to try that out on a future project.
As you can see in the pics, these chairs are not painted perfectly. There are lots of paint drips due to my lack of furniture painting skills and all of the detail on the chairs. Since I was going for that distressed look I was able to sand down the paint drips a bit so they were not as noticeable.
Overall I am pretty happy with how the chairs turned out. With the shiny new red paint and the sassy zebra fabric these chairs add the perfect pop of color to our bonus room. My daughters love them and to me that’s all that really matters!
