Well, it sure has been a long six months since construction first got started on the porch and kitchen and I am thrilled to say that it’s all now finally done! One of the projects that I have been so excited to share with you is the big change that we ended up making to our kitchen and family room by removing the door that led to the back porch. I first showed you a peek back in July which you can read all about here.
This is what the space looked like before all of the construction began.
I was so happy to say goodbye to that door. It was metal and when I removed the blinds a while back it was full of holes from the screws which I had no idea how to fix. I also had attempted to paint it black which I quickly realized was way more work than I thought. I tried to cover it up with some primer and it ended up looking like this for over a year until it was finally removed.
Once the door was taken out, a huge opening for the built in cabinet was created.
The opening looked like this for quite a while until the built in pieces were installed.
Seeing the first piece go in was a truly happy day.
In just a few hours the once empty space now looked like this!
After the electrician installed the lighting and outlet the built in cabinet was now complete. I could not wait to get started styling the upper bookcase and filling the base cabinet with all of my serving pieces that had been stashed throughout the kitchen and dining room. It is so nice to now have everything all in one place.
Here a few more views of the before.
And now the after! The entire piece was painted Sherwin Williams Alabaster to match our existing trim color. The wood top was stained Provincial by Minwax.
I have always loved the look of built in cabinetry and it was something I had hoped to add to our home one day. By removing the exterior door and adding the built in cabinet it makes both the family room and kitchen feel so much bigger. It is also so nice to have the extra space to display family photos and books as well as a serving area for entertaining.
Next time I will be sharing what the other side of the door now looks like and a porch reveal is coming soon too!
Have a great week!
